The Outer Richmond Residence was inspired by simplicity, timelessness, and contemporary sophistication. Nestled next to Ocean beach, our clients wanted a fresh start, and a fresh space. So, they took the original home down to the studs. With such a blank canvas of a project, we sat down with the project architects to understand their vision and ethos for the project.
“The overall ambition of the project was to create an understated, refined environment using a simple, neutral/monochromatic material palette,” shares James Leng, Principal Architect of Figure. “The black and grays of the kitchen, bath, and living room millwork complement well the white tones of the quartz and porcelain slab clad surfaces, and the pale tones of the oak wood floors.”
The project called for quiet closures and matte finishes, underpinning the multi-functional use of the surfaces. “We worked with Open Standard to select a matte black kitchen cabinet front that also very subtly captured the surrounding hues of the well daylit kitchen area. The black tones of the kitchen, stair rail, and bath vanities created a visual focal point and a contrasting accent in an otherwise white and bright house,” says Leng.
